Q: What is Aromatherapy? Back To Top

A: Aromatherapy is the practice of using volatile plant oils, including essential oils, for psychological and physical well-being. A pleasing, natural aroma can have a positive psychological effect on the body. Essential oils which are the pure “essence” of a plant have been found to provide both psychological and physical benefits when used correctly and safely.

Q: What are essential oils? Back To Top

A: Essential oils are highly concentrated aromatic extracts which are distilled from a variety of aromatic plant material including grasses, leaves, flowers, needles & twigs, peel of fruit, wood and roots. To capture the oils, manufacturers usually heat the plant part in water and collect the steam. As the steam condenses, the essential oil is distilled from the water. This fragrant concentrated oil is at least 50 times more potent than the original plant.

Q: What are fragrance oils? Back To Top

A: Perfume oils, also known as fragrance oils or “fragrances”, are not the same as essential oils. Fragrance oils are synthetic. They have been created in a lab to resemble the original. At first whiff they smell similar to essential oils, but they don’t contain the compounds which give essential oils their healing properties. God’s Country Botanicals does not use any fragrance oils in any of our products.

Q: How are essential oils used? Back To Top

A : Due to the highly concentrated properties of essential oils, most of them require dilution before they can be used. The most frequent methods of applying oils include massage, inhalation, and bath. Diffusers allow oils to vaporize for indirect application. Currently, God’s Country Botanicals only provides products that have been diluted to the proper proportions for inhalation and absorption through the skin.

Q: Why use essential oils? Back To Top

A: Essential Oils are pure (unadulterated, untainted, whole, clean), and natural (from nature, genuine, not synthetic, organic). They have benefits equal to or greater than many manufactured chemicals, such as terpines and aldehydes, and do not cause side effects such as respiratory ailments, asthma, nausea, headaches, even cancer, the second leading cause of death in the U.S. For thousands of years, people relied on aromatics to cure ailments. However, with the scientific revolution of the early nineteenth century, chemists were able to identify the various constituents of the oils, laying the groundwork for the development (and lucrative patent-ability) of the oils’ synthetic counterparts, and the growth of the modern drug industry. Nevertheless, reconstructing some of the oils’ chemical properties has remained elusive, rendering the reproduction less potent and more hazardous (but more marketable) than the original.

Q: How do essential oils work? Back To Top

A. The aromatic molecules of essential oils react with specific nerve receptors, which in turn trigger electrochemical impulses that are conducted directly into the brain. Aromas are then transmitted to the limbic system, a part of the brain which perceives and responds to memory, pleasure and emotions. Odor triggers the limbic system to release brain-affecting chemicals known as neurochemicals. Enkephalin reduces pain and creates a feeling of well-being. Endorphins also reduce pain and induce sexual feelings. Serotonin helps relax and calm.

Q: What kind of research has been done on essential oils? Back To Top

A: Literally hundreds of studies have been conducted and more are being performed every day. For a partial list of some of the most relevant studies, please visit www.NAHA.org and click on Research & References. We also feature some of the latest research on our website under “Articles” .

Q: What is synergy? Back To Top

A. Essential oils may be blended together to provide an especially pleasing fragrance and are also used to aid in providing a specific health benefit. A synergistic essential oil blend of the correct oils in proper proportions is considered to be greater in total benefit than each oil working independently.

Q: Are essential oils safe? Back To Top

A: In general, those essential oils which are commonly available are safe to use for aromatherapy or household uses. However, due to their high concentration and potency, it is necessary to become aware of some safety precautions. Essential oils should never be applied undiluted to the skin. Essential oils should never be taken internally. Never spray essential oils that have been mixed with water directly at the eyes. Water mixtures should always be shaken immediately prior to use since oils tend to float to the top of the liquid. Care should be taken when using essential oils around babies and children as some oils can cause skin irritation, and in extreme cases, toxicity. God’s Country Botanicals uses only the safest oils in the lowest concentration necessary for therapeutic effects.

Q: What if I have an allergic reaction? Back To Top

A: As true essential oils come directly from plants, there is a possibility of an allergic reaction. If you are allergic to plants, grasses or trees, please check with your doctor before using products with essential oils. If you’re not sure if you are allergic, try a bit of the product on the inside of your wrist. If, after 24 hours, you do not develop a reaction, try the product on a larger area. If you develop a reaction, please contact us.

Q: How can essential oil products enhance my life? Back To Top

A: Essential oils not only smell wonderful, but they are beneficial to mind, body, and spirit. Many times, an essential oil product can take the place of a more harmful product, such as a disinfectant or room deodorizer, keeping you and your family from absorbing many toxic chemicals. Sick House Syndrome is a direct result of the overuse of today’s unsafe household and cleaning products. Products made with essential oils give you the benefit without the detriment.
